The Clock Wiki
Christian Marclay

Christian Marclay is a Swiss-born artist.

His early work plays with different uses for vinyl records. He re-assembled broken records, melted down records, and his 1985 album Record Without a Cover incorporates the wear and tear on a record into the work itself.

Marclay began working with video in the 1990s. His first film Telephones weaves together excerpts from narrative films where people use phones. Up and Out combines the image from Michelangelo Antonioni's Blow-Up and the sound from Brian De Palma's Blow Out.

The Clock has since become Marclay's best known work. It plays as a 24-hour loop of references to the current time.

Other found footage works by Marclay include Video Quartet, Crossfire, Made to Be Destroyed, 48 War Movies, and Doors.
